Council for Opportunity in Education

28th Annual Conference

College Opportunity: A National Investment | September 9-12, 2009 | Grand Hyatt, San Antonio, TX

Backpack Power Project Success!!

On September 11, 2009, President Obama declared the day as a National Day of Service. The TRIO community was one step ahead. They wanted every child at San Antonio’s Roosevelt Elementary School to begin the new school year with a backpack filled with school supplies.

The Council for Opportunity in Education, with its partner Communities in Schools, challenged the TRIO community with the goal of donating 600 backpacks with school supplies. The TRIO Community was not only up for the challenge but exceeded the goal. TRIO individuals, programs, and associations from all over the nation donated more than 750 backpacks with supplies and $5,000 in financial contributions. The Council for Opportunity in Education hosted an event at Roosevelt Elementary School where backpacks were given out to 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students. A number of community members joined in the occasion and spoke to the students about the importance of education and giving back.

We would like to thank Richard Niemiec from the National TRIO Alumni Association; India Chumney and staff from Communities in Schools; Principal Pamela Reece and staff from Roosevelt Elementary School; Elizabeth Garza, Superintendent of the Edgewood Independent School District; Thomas Larralde from State Senator Uresti’s office; and Matthew Jones from State Senator Van Putte’s office for joining us on the monumental day. We also could not have done without the TRIO Student Support Services students from San Antonio College who came out to support the event and hand out backpacks to the children.

We would also like to thank Costco in San Antonio for donating 50 backpacks and Cox Radio for promoting the public service event on their radio stations.

Finally — but most important — we would like to give a BIG THANK YOU to everyone who made a donation!! Your kindness and support made this event more successful than ever anticipated.

If you would like participate in the planning of next year’s public service event that will be in conjunction with the Council for Opportunity in Education's 29th Annual Conference in San Diego, CA (September 2010), please contact either Tracy Lyons (tlyons@uab.edu) or Angelica Vialpando (angelica.vialpando@coenet.us).
